what we do

World Reading Day is one day, held once a year, where people of all ages are encouraged to make time to enjoy the simple pleasure of reading. World Reading Day is held on the first Wednesday of October every year and the next World Reading Day will be held on Wednesday the 5th of October 2016.

World Reading Day seeks to inspire people to turn off the TV, logoff the net, put away the video games & ignore all the other myriad distractions of modern life and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading a book instead.

World Reading Day encourages people everywhere to organise their own events to promote reading. Be this a school having a class where pupils take it in turns to read a page from their favourite book, a workplace where an after work book club is held or a retirement home where people are encouraged to rediscover the books that helped shape their lives.

We also run a 'Buy a Book' initiative where we encourage people when buying presents for children to buy them a book either to complement or as their gift.

Please see our 'get involved' page for more suggestions on how you can participate and our 'free resources' page for free material to help you promote your own event.
